ASL Interpreting Mishap Prompts New Interpreting Bill in Florida

February 2, 2018– Back in September, a sign language interpreter made nationwide headlines by falsely interpreting Hurricane Irma warnings. This catastrophic event prompted Florida leaders to pass a new bill that requires all American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to be certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

At ACD, we are committed to providing highly qualified ASL interpreting services to the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing community. This new legislation is a step in the right direction, ensuring that Floridians with hearing impairment receive pertinent information in life-threatening emergencies.
